Do you think Briony was the only one to blame?
Don't you think the parents or the police were also
irresponsible for trusting such a young girl's statement?

Cecilia Tallis: My brother and I found the two of them down by the lake.
Police Inspector: You didn't see anyone else?
Cecilia Tallis: I wouldn't necessarily believe everything Briony tells you. She's rather fanciful.

I don't think Briony is the only responsible for what happened. No! She was a childish and foolish girl, yes... but her family, in my point of view, thought it would be a good excuse to get rid of Robbie. A relationship between their oldest daughter Cecilia with the son of their housekeeper would never be well accepted in English high Society. So, for sure Briony was cruel and guilty, but I don't think she was the only one. Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tallis found it very propitious and used it for their own profit...

( parenthesis about "Becoming Jane"... )

( parenthesis about "Becoming Jane"... )

Becoming Jane

"Atonement's epigraph is taken from Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, in which a naïve young woman, caught up in fantasies from the Gothic fiction she loves to read, imagines that her host in an English country house is a villain. In Austen's novel Catherine Norland's mistakes are comical and have no serious outcome, while in Atonement, Briony's fantasies have tragic effects upon those around her." x

This shows the inspiration Jane Austen has over Ian McEwan's wonderful novel Atonement. Well, I am a great great fan of Jane Austen's novels and completely crazy about Ian McEwan's. I think their writing style is quite similar and the atmosphere they create too. Of course, times are different and Atonement is sort of a modernized version of Jane Austen's novels. Well, I think this review says it all:
"Brilliant. . . . McEwan could be the most psychologically astute writer working today, our era's Jane Austen." from Esquire Magazine

So, here, in today's parenthesis, I just wanted to encourage you to see this wonderful film, I really loved, starring James McAvoy (our dear, dear Robbie Turner from Atonement) and Anne Hattaway (from The Devil wears Prada): Becoming Jane. It is the biographical Jane Austen's love story. An extremely moving story. Hope you enjoy it, well I did...
trailer: here

Tom Lefroy: I think that you, Miss Austen,
consider yourself a cut above the company.

Jane Austen: Me?

Tom Lefroy: You, ma'am. Secretly.

Briony's evolution

Briony's evolution

Who is your favorite Briony?
Briony aged 13
Briony aged 18
Or the older Briony

Well, I think the three interpretations of Briony's character are astonishing! Seriously, Saoirse Ronan (Briony aged 13) is absolutely fantastic, Romola Garai (Briony aged 18) is really amazing and finally Vanessa Redgrave... well, we cannot even say how spectacular her monologue is. For me, those final scenes are extremely touching and emotive. So, I think they are all great actresses and I simply loved the way they lead Briony's evolution during the story.

Baftas 2008

Baftas 2008
James McAvoy, Anne-Marie Duff, Keira Knightey, Rosamund Pike and Joe Wright

Unfortunately Atonement just won 2 awards from the 14 it was nominated. I am really sad! It's not fair! James McAvoy deserved the award! (and Keira, of course). Plus, Joe Wright was a great director! And Dario Marianelli did a wonderful job! I am seriously very dissapointed by this year's Bafta.
Well, so here's the list of Atonement's awards tonight:

x - Best Film - x
x - Production Design - x

Well, I am really sad right now. I think the movie deserved at least the Best Director, Actor and Music award. Plus, for special effects, the award was givent to The Golden Compass (who is a terrible film) and not to Pirates of The Caribbean (who is one of the best movies I have ever seen). I am really sad.
At least, Marion Cotillard won for best actress...

{ at least James McAvoy was set just after Daniel Day-Lewis, so... it was pretty close! }

* true love? *

* true love? *

Do you think Robbie and Cee's passion and love happen in real life?
Do you believe in such powerful feeling? A feeling which kept them together for five years...

I don't know... True love, at least, Robbie and Cecilia's love is too powerful and beautiful do be real. Unfortunately, I think nowadays love tends more and more to become the simple act of sex and desire, without any feeling at all. Romance is now something to dream with and not to be lived. (what is terrible in my point of view). My french teacher (someone I admire a lot), told me that this conception of love (the pure and eternal love which is shown here) had its apogee during the 19th Century and since 1960, it turned to a much more "physical attraction". It is curious to think about Love's evolution and even question ourselves if it really exists... Since Atonement is a novel and since in fiction everything can happen, even the most wonderful things, I agree that Robbie Turner and Cecilia Tallis's love is eternal and sincere. In the other hand, I cannot tell it really happens in real life, since I have never lived such feeling and don't quite know anyone who did it...

...anyway, today it is St. Valentine's day!! Let's pretend Robbie and Cee's love really exists and that our prince charming is coming for us (in case you don't have your own yet). At least, I am looking for my Robbie Turner^^
